Starting the thread rolling heres how I'd put together the early game ships:

The numbers in italics represent the upgrade costs and the rest pretty much speaks for itself. This would help to fill out the middle ages a bit better IMO (Galleys here a more like Byzantine and Venetian models than classical ones). The Gun Hulk could also lead on to the man-o-war which would replace it around the late 16th century and the caravel would be the precursor to both Sloops and Galleons (Galleys could also be upgraded to Galleons).

Alright; can you explain the hulk to me? ie how did it move and how did it attack?

Also, I've added the new ships to the base unit list

The Hulk (sometimes spelt Holk) was basicly a 3 masted medieval warship, a bigger version of a cog and the prototype of the recognisable Man O'Wars of the 16th century. I guess that because they were pretty cumbersome ships the name has come to mean an immobile demasted hull, but in their day they were some of the most powerful ships afloat.

PS What should I do for the graphics?

Excellent! That works... My skimpy research confused me there, but I have actually heard of it before.

Other ships I'm considering are the Penteconter, Bireme, Quinquireme, Cogge, Carrack, War Galleon, and possibly more later, that's as far as I've looked at so far (mainly looking at EU3). The more the merrier (we have a LOT of turns to fill), but let me know if you think any shouldn't be included. And I agree with the extra ships you added to fill out that time period a little more

Also, while I'm at it, here is the general structure of the mod's mesoamerican units, so far:

AZTEC WARFARE

Warriors (weak shock units using clubs "Quauhololli")
Spearmen (weak anti-cavalry using long wooden pikes "Tepoztopilli")
Jaguar (swordsman, requires obsidian instead of iron, holding "Macuahuitl")
...possibly axemen

Slingers (very weak archery units using slings "Tematlatl")
Archers (mid archery units using traditional bows and arrows, replace longbow but weaker?)
AtlAtls (using the atlatl (dart thrower), a replacement for crossbowman as both crossbowman and atlatl use darts)

Armour: Quilted Cotton Tunics, Shields

MAYAN WARFARE

The same, except replace archers with spearthrowers (Holkans), as they were much more common. I wonder if I should use English terms or see if I can find the proper ancient terms (ie spearthrower or Holkan)

INCAN WARFARE

Bola Warriors (really weak shock units who use a stone fastened to rope) perhaps a new kind of unit with 1 str?
Warriors (weak shock units holding clubs or bolas)
Spearmen (weak spear units holding weapons ending in a curved blade scimitar-like)
Short Swordsmen (holding wooden, small, serrated swords?)

Slingers (very weak archery units)

Armour: heavy woolen tunics and tall or round shields

OLMEC WARFARE

Mainly axemen and spearmen; for a while they had a sort of phalanx but it was ineffective. These were for guarding trade routes until they came into conflict with the Mayas.

ZAPOTEC WARFARE

Wore small shields, similar to Aztec warfare but less elite units

MIXTEC/TOLTEC ?

~~~
Also, beyond these standard historical units, I will have adaptations for macemen, phalanx and pikemen
ARTWORK SPECS
Warrior = weak unit with club or bola -1 str
Footman? = weak unit with club, short swordsman, etc.?
Spearman = weak unit with short wood and flint spear with a broad, serrated tip -1 str
Axeman = weak unit with flint-embedded axe -1 str
(L)Swordsman = weak unit with basic Macahuitl or serrated short wooden sword -1 str
(H)Swordsman = metal-armoured unit with weird flint axey thing or nice Macahuitl -1 str
Maceman = armoured unit with nice club (inca with darkened quechua club) -1 str
Pikeman = armoured unit with obsidian sickle pike (inca with simple pike) -1 str
Archer = weak unit with sling -1 str
Longbow = unit with bow and arrow (spears for mayans) -2 str
Crossbow = unit with atl atl (inca gets war arrows instead? or no unit) -2 str
Jaguar Warrior(aztec) = (H)Swordsman with nice Macahuitl, jaguar costuming
Eagle Warrior(mixtec) = (H) Swordsman with nice Macahuitl, eagle costuming
Lightning Warrior(zapotec) = speedy Axeman with similar weaponry and armour but bright feathery costuming
Coyote Warrior(toltec) = speedy (H) Swordsman with paddle/broad wooden sword, coyote costuming
Black Axe?(olmec) = generic obsidian axeman; slightly more powerful melee brawler
Inca UU tba... I have to look at the civopedia entry to see if they did a good job of finding a UU
Completed: Jaguar Warrior, Eagle Warrior, Black Axe (unless future changes desired), Aztec Spearman, Aztec (L)Footman/Swordsman, Aztec Slinger, Inca (L) Footman/Swordsman
In Progress: Lightning Warrior, Coyote Warrior, Inca (H) Footman/ Swordsman, Aztec Pikeman
Not Started: some normal military units
Basic Infantry = no bonuses
Swordsman/Infantry = small city attack bonus?
Axeman/Maceman = small bonus against melee, weaker but cheaper
Spearman/Pikeman = bonus against cavalry
Archer = bonus against infantry
Cavalry = bonus against archery and siege
Early Unit Strengths and Costs
Scout (1)[15] - can only defend
Warrior (2)[15]
Archer (3)[25] - first strike, small bonus against infantry?
Chariot (4)[35] - withdraw chance
Spearman (4)[35] - big bonus against cavalry
Axeman (4)[30] - bonus against melee
Footman (5)[40] -
Horse Archer (5)[50] - immune to first strikes, first strike?
Pikeman (6)[60] - big bonus against cavalry
Mounted Infantry/Horseman (6)[70] - big bonus against archery
Longbow/Crossbow (6)[60]
Heavy Footman (7)[70] -
Maceman (8) - bonus against melee
Knight (10) - bonus against archery?
Mesoamerican Units will go as follows
Warrior (1)[15]
Slinger (2)[25] - first strike, small bonus against infantry?
Spearman (3)[30]
Axeman (3)[35] - small melee bonus
Footman (4)[40]
Pikeman (5)[50]
Archer/Spear Thrower (4)[55] 1 first strike
AtlAtl/War Archer (5)[60] 1 first strike
Heavy Footman (6)[70]
as well as adaptations of all the others, which will remain pretty much unusable, for example because of lack of horses
found graphics for the holk/gun holk. For the normal holk, I will just blot out the cannons, or vice versa
