Hey everyone,
I've been thinking of upgrading this website with the "Advanced Hosting" features which freeforums.org offers, which will basically give me control of every aspect of the website and the forum will be a much better place to post. I was thinking that it might attract more members as well, because it would actually be "civjunction.org" rather than appearing as just some free forum invision free spinoff sort of website. But before I spend 64$ for one year of the upgrade, I want to know if you guys think you could really commit and think this site could succeed. Thus, the poll. Please post what you think. :woot:

I want to upgrade the website, but I just want a little "backup" on my decision so I feel more confident in doing so.

Hey dk, if you want to see the forums grow and attract more members...then by all means go for it :headbang:

P.S I actually found this thread by mistake, is hidden?

Nope...Its a global announcement... :|

And I think I may do it once I can get a hold of a credit card. ;)

And some stuff that you guys should know you can find here.

The benefits:
Quote:
It should work out to about 64.90 for a year with the coupon from FreeForums.

There is no additional monthly fees as you pay for the year at once and that is it unless yu want to add a service on that does not come with the package.

The forum works the same except you will have the unmodified version which has somethings in it that can't be done on the FreeForums network like the style editor, and the template editor. You also have FTP access for uploading things to your space.

You own the site and you run it how you want to, you also get a free domain name and you have space to build web site(s) you have your own email with unlimited accounts, unlimited databases, can make your own subdomains (like forum.originalgathering.com ) and is unlimited how many subdomains you have. You also get many tools for setting up blogs, wikis, build web pages, manages your site, FTP access, backups and restore both for your site and databases and also through the backup and restore service in phpbb3. and so on. The Features are all listed on the lunar pages site that the advanced hosting page takes you to.

This gives you ability to totally run your forum, install the mods and styles you like, edit templates upload rank images, avatar, smileys, galleries, set up regular backups and do backups before you do anything so you can restore if you need to and so on.

No one tells you what has to go on the site. If you want ads you can put them on, but otherwise you don't have to have the, or only have them only parts of your site.

As long as you go through the FreeForum coupon Jackal will install the new, unmodified PHPBB3 software for you and then restore your database to it, so you will have all your members, settings, etc and not lose any of that data.

You also have access to FreeForums phpbb3 support as well as having the Lunar pages support and help desk.

What will happen during the upgrade:
Quote:
The move does not take that long once it gets started and when that is you can discuss with support when you send the moving information. Moving does not take that long.

I don't know if there is a way to make a forwarder to put on your freeforums forum but since you have custom disable message I usually suggest that people disable the board with a message that your moving and once moved then change the message to give the new URL.

So basically what that's saying is it will move EVERYTHING here to a new database with the URL www.civjunction.org and during this this site at www.civjunction.freeforums.org will still exist. So during the move I'll disable this board with a message saying that we're moving and give it a link to the new URL.

I have yet to know if I should disable the board before or after the move is done. I think to be safe I'll PM one of the admins over there.

oh...it's just that it doesn't show when someone makes a new post in announcements...maybe it's me :handchin:

so when "we" move, will we have to register again?

No, everything will be exactly the same except we'll be at the new database.

All the same posts, threads, avatars, users, EVERYTHING. :P

(BTW, who voted no?)

I voted no. $64.90 p.a. is quite a lot, especially considering the current economic climate, what with fear of recession and the credit crunch, and it would be better spent on sweets.

Plus, there's already a site called CivJunction.com, and people might get them confused.

I don't see how civjunction.freeforums.org is any less confusing...

I could change the name of the site if we needed to, which I proposed last month after finding out about the whole April fools thing.

And Catharsis, the money really isn't an issue. ;) 64 bucks for an entire year is fine with me, I'll just spend a little bit of my birthday money.

So now that I have come to the conclusion that there is in fact demand for a new name...

I guess I'll make a new topic for name brainstorming. Look in site feedback. :woot:

Besides the imply that we have a limited number of members, I don't care.

It says "unlimited accounts" under upgraded, implying that other wise it's limited, it might be refering to some sort of email thing though.

That's strange... :|

If there is in fact a limit on members then we're definitely upgrading. I'll look around on FF just to see if that is a fact.

News about the current situation...

I still want to know a few more things before I upgrade, so maybe a few days or so.

I'm going to ask my parents if I can use their credit card (with my money) to upgrade. We'll see what happens...:P
